Mack Brown, Jack Ingram, Matthew McConaughey, Vince Young…and The Revell Family, Champions Fighting to Cure Duchenne

For some people it takes a trophy or medal to denote a champion. For those in the fight against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, there are all kinds of champions and you won’t know them by their trophy.

Duchenne parents Tim and Laura Revell are such champions but they didn’t plan it this way. When their sons were diagnosed with Duchenne, they made the choice to fight from their heart and leave it all on the field every day. 

Watch the video to learn more about the Revell’s story. With no cure and no treatment in sight 10 years ago, they joined CureDuchenne and their mission to find a cure for Duchenne. Enlisting their circle of friends and their friends’ circle of friends, the Revell’s soon connected with Mack and Sally Brown. The legendary coach of the University of Texas Longhorn football team, Mack knew a little something about the importance of teamwork to reach a goal. He was instrumental in helping the Revell’s launch the first Champions to CureDuchenne six years ago.

As the event grew, so did the connections and supporters. The dollars raised continue to go toward funding promising research for rare Duchenne genetic mutations including duplications within the gene.  Dr. Kevin Flanigan and his team at Nationwide Children’s Hospital began by studying exon skipping as a potential therapy for duplicated exons. This led him and his team to uncover a novel way to skip the duplication, thereby restoring the genetic blueprint for muscle function.  CureDuchenne has always been interested in rare mutations and has funded Dr. Flanigan’s research since 2011.

With a game plan in hand, now more than ever dollars became critical. Mack helped the Revell’s raise the stakes by introducing them to legendary college quarterback and NFL standout Vince Young who added his name and reputation to the Champions event.

Mack didn’t stop there. He teamed up with his friends, country music artist Jack Ingram and Mathew McConaughey to create Mack, Jack and McConaughey to benefit five children’s charities, including CureDuchenne. This past April, this event raised more than $1.5 million to benefit these impactful charities.

With a common goal, this circle of support keeps growing and growing. What started out small and local soon turned into a Texas-sized effort to find a cure for Duchenne. And it all began with a determined Duchenne dad and compassionate mom, Tim and Laura, who show us every day that everyone can be a champion.
