CureDuchenne Launches Virtual Durable Medical Equipment Expo for the Duchenne Community
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., October 26, 2017 – CureDuchenne, a nonprofit dedicated to funding research and improving patient care for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, launched the CureDuchenne Cares Virtual Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Expo as a resource for the Duchenne community. Mobility equipment is important for those with Duchenne as they start to lose ambulation and muscle strength. The equipment helps keep them active and supports their day-to-day lives. Parents and caregivers are therefore determined to ensure that their child has the most appropriate equipment needed across the various stages of the disease. CureDuchenne has brought the durable medical equipment exhibition experience into the living rooms of families affected by Duchenne via the CureDuchenne Cares Virtual DME Expo.
CureDuchenne received a STRIVE Award (Strategies to Realize Innovation, Vision and Empowerment), from PTC Therapeutics, Inc. to develop the CureDuchenne Cares Virtual DME Expo. The STRIVE Award recognizes the vital role patient advocacy groups play in improving the lives of individuals affected by Duchenne, and grants are awarded to facilitate unique, inventive ideas or programs that support patients and families within the Duchenne community.
The CureDuchenne Cares Virtual DME Expo is an innovative, interactive, educational online resource that enables caregivers and family members to access information on a wide range of equipment that could help keep their loved ones mobile and active for longer. The website offers exhibit halls with information about the following durable medical equipment:
- Orthoses
- Mobility Devices
- Home Equipment
- Respiratory Devices
By combining an exhibit hall, resource center and a lounge chat room, the Virtual DME Expo aims to help parents and family members navigate through the many challenges and questions that surface with a Duchenne diagnosis and equipment needs at various stages of the disease. With the knowledge obtained and the important connections made through this resource, the Expo will help foster hope and empower Duchenne families.

“At CureDuchenne we strive to create and share valuable resources for families to help them navigate the journey of Duchenne,” said Tiffany Cook, CureDuchenne Family Resource Manager. “The Virtual DME Expo is a new tool for families that provides information in a user-friendly environment to support their loved ones.”
