Athletes, Celebrities and Community Leaders Tee Up to Support CureDuchenne
NEWPORT BEACH, CA. August 31, 2016 – For the sixth year, the captain of the Anaheim Ducks Ryan Getzlaf and a team of professional athletes supported the 6th annual Getzlaf Golf Shootout, presented by ActivePDF, on August 26 and 27 to help CureDuchenne find a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
The annual shootout raised $380,000 for CureDuchenne, a national nonprofit that is working to find a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a lethal genetic disease that causes muscle degeneration. Proceeds of the event funds research to help find a cure for Duchenne. Since its inception, the Getzlaf Golf Shootout has raised more than $1.68 million to help those with Duchenne around the world battle this devastating disease.
The two-day event kicked off Friday evening on August 26 with a chic MVP party at the Sutra Lounge in Costa Mesa. With more than 320 guests present, the sold-out party included athletes, celebrities and supporters, excited for the shootout the following day. This year’s celebrity participants included current National Hockey League players Clayton Stoner, Luca Sbisa, Andrew Cogliano; former NHL players Brian Sutherby, Teemu Selänne, Brad May, Jean-François Jomphe, John Blue; Anaheim Ducks General Manager Bob Murray; former Major League Baseball players Chuck Finley, Jim Leyritz, Bobby Crosby, Charlie Hough, Jaret Wright, Clyde Wright; actor Brian Van Holt; and director Drake Doremus.
Highlighting the MVP party was a live auction featuring luxurious getaways at the Four Seasons in Bora Bora, a trip to Bermuda and a golf, fishing and surf excursion to Costa Rica. For the sports lovers, the auction featured one-of-a-kind experiences including a trip for two to the World Cup Hockey Finals, and a chance to experience a home game at the Angels Baseball Legends Suite and an Anaheim Ducks luxury suite for 20 people with a meet and greet with Ryan Getzlaf.
The golf tournament on August 27 included 36 foursomes and included activities at all 18 holes including food and drinks, cigar lounge, blackjack table, dunk tank, massage chairs, bourbon tasting and a million-dollar hole in one contest. The tournament included a putting contest with a hockey stick, the longest drive competition and prizes for the top three finishers of the golf tournament with the winning team bringing home the Getzlaf Golf Cup.
After meeting Hawken Miller, a student at USC who was diagnosed with Duchenne at age 5, Ryan Getzlaf and his wife, Paige became ardent supporters of CureDuchenne and the Duchenne community. Touched by Hawken’s strength and tenacity, Getzlaf has steadfastly committed his time and energy to the goal of finding a cure for this disease.
“As parents, Paige and I are proud to support CureDuchenne. When we think about CureDuchenne, we see the kids, all 300,000 of them who are waiting for a lifesaving cure and we are proud to help,” explained Ryan Getzlaf.
“Ryan and Paige Getzlaf have made a sincere impact on my life both with the work they do for CureDuchenne and with their ongoing generosity. They continue to show me that true strength comes from the heart. I am incredibly thankful for the hope they give me and so many others,” said Hawken Miller.
